the attack if general petraeus does not testify. >> reporter: cnn has not been able to reach broadwell for comment. >> athena jones reporting. author william boyle has spoken to general petraeus and worked with him and followed his career up close as he researched a book after iraq, and i asked him what it was like to interview petraeus. >> i wrote a book about him and i interviewed him -- a book about iraq and interviewed him in 2010 and when i asked him for an interview, i got an e-mail response from him directly like that. i got other e-mails from him subsequent to that, subsequent to our interview, where he was enthusiastic and supportive and cheering me on for getting good reviews, and it was like i had a mentor. you know, he is very effective personally. but then when i start reading about the fact that he may have been obsessively e-mailing his mistress and so forth, he struck me as a man who may have had a digital addiction or a digital, almost like a digital mania, which i think all of us can maybe relate to these days, because he's a guy who was constantly e-mailing

to cnn that the fbi probe that led to david petraeus' resignation was launched after jill kelly contacted the fbi about that e-mail she said she received. she viewed it as threatening, she said, and it turned out to be from paula bradwell, but the source said the e-mail was jealous in tone but didn't know much about the content or if there was more than one e-mail. kelly has been known to be on the washington social circuit as well. according to this government source, who had actually met her at a washington party. >> suzanne kelly talking to a lot of folks in washington and we'll hear from -- more from you, i'm sure, as the story continues to unfold. the head of the cia was conducting an illicit affair. is that in itself a matter of national security? some members of congress apparently think it is. and they're asking why the intelligent committees weren't informed about the matter before they were. cnn's dana bash is live for us on capitol hill. dana, first off what is the reaction from people you have spoken to up on the hill. what are people saying today, a few days now aft

anger over why the white house and other top congressional leaders weren't told sooner. a time line cnn has put together shows the republican house majority leader may have known about former cia director david petraeus' extramarital affair before the president did. that's according to aides to congressman eric cantor who tell us he found out from an fbi employee concerned that national security might have been breached as a result of the affair. cantor was told on october 27th. president obama didn't find out about the affair until after election day. congressional leaders from both parties are upset that neither they nor the president were informed until late last week. >> obviously this was a matter involving a potential compromise of security. and the president should have been told about it at the earliest date. >> reporter: a u.s. official said there was no breach of security as a result of the affair. a cantor aide says the congressman called the fbi's leadership to report the information he got on october 31st. but according to "the wall street journal," the fbi's probe had alre

syria since 1973. cnn senior international correspondent sarah is joining us from jerusalem to talk a little bit about all of this that's taking place, and you had a chance, an exclusive, to sit down with israel's president simon peres to talk about what is taking place there. it is somewhat alarming, the escalating violence. does he think that there is really going to be kind of an escalation in gaza? >> well, we asked him that question directly, and he made it sound as if there was not going to be a major escalation, but couch that with saying that they had to see what the proper thing is to do there, because we have been seeing dozens upon dozens of rockets coming in to israel. much of this started really on thursday with the death of a 13-year-old palestinian boy who was in gaza simply playing football outside of his home. he was shot and killed. now, the witnesses there said that the shots came from israeli soldiers in a jeep. however, the israeli military is investigating and they say they do not believe they were in that area, and that they do not believe they were responsible
